Tips on How to Get a Great Twist Out
Achieving a great twist out really isn’t that hard to do. I think most naturals get caught up in products when in reality it’s the technique that produces a great hairstyle.
Below I’m providing my tips on how to achieve a great twist out.

Below I’m providing my tips on how to achieve a great twist out.
- Set your twists for a few days.
- I hardly ever unravel my twists the next day. I typically allow my twists to set for 2-3 days. You can wear your hair in an updo or pull your twists back in a ponytail or bun until your ready to unravel.
- Fewer products are better.
- I use only one product to set the twists. I find that using fewer products is the best way to avoid build up. It’ll also help you to achieve fluffier twist outs. There are so many great products out there but my favorite is the TGIN Twist and Define cream.
- Oils – I have a lot of hair so I like to rub oils on my twists once I’m done. If your hair is thin, I wouldn’t recommend this. Instead, oil your scalp and use a light oil to unravel.
- Technique
- Of course HOW you twist your hair is really what matters. You want to twist your hair tight and smooth down the hair strand while twisting. If you have puffy ends, use a little more product on the ends and comb through gently. Twirl your ends so that they are secure. For a very defined look try flat twists and for a curly style use perm rods.
- Unraveling – I like to use a light oil to unravel the twists. Sweet almond, grape seed and coconut oil are great light oils. How much I separate really depends on how I set the twists. If I set my twists on damp hair I will unravel and then separate twice. If I set the twists on dry hair, I will unravel and then separate once. On blown out hair, I unravel but do not separate. I think how much you separate depends on your hair texture and the look your going for.
