The Drama: Tangled and Matted Natural Hair

I’m going to be very transparent about this subject.

I post many pictures on social media and receive tons of praise regarding my hair. “Oh it looks so healthy!!”, “Love your hair!!”, “Your my new hair crush!!” What these ladies didn’t know was underneath it all, I was battling with matted tangled hair.

I convinced myself that I was too busy to properly dentangle. The truth was, I'd gotten lazy. I noticed my hair becoming matted around September and tried desperately to detangle during my weekly wash. By December though, I had a mangled mess and I even considered doing another big chop.

I began 2014, convinced that I would find a way to rid myself of this matted hair for good. I reached out to several women and did my own research. By mid-February I was able to run my fingers through my hair (sorta) again. So I’m sharing how I was able to successful detangle my thick coarse hair and a few things I learned along the way.

Do’s and Dont's
- Do not brush your hair
- Do not shampoo your hair
- Do not prolong detangling your hair (the problem will not resolve on its own)
- Do wash your hair in twists to avoid detangled hair in the future
- Do use warm water (in a spray bottle) and finger detangle your hair first
- Do use a large tooth comb (or other detangling tool)
- Do detangle your hair in small sections
- Do use a light oil to help detangle hair
- Do use a conditioner with great slip
- Do detangle from roots to ends
- Do detangle your hair with every wash
