Let's Talk Oils: Avocado Oil

Image
I first started using avocado oil about three years ago. It's a very lightweight non-greasy oil, much like jojoba oil. Avocado oil however has high quantities of monounsaturated fats which makes it great for natural hair. You can use avocado oil as: a carrier oil hot oil treatment sealant add to a conditioner detangler I personally love using avocado oil as a prepoo. Just mix together a 1/2 cup of whipped coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of honey along with 1/4 cup of avocado oil.  Apply the mixture to wet or damp hair and finger detangle gently. Check out the diagram below for other benefits of avocado oil:

Tips for Beating the Cold Season

Image
This post isn't the norm for my blog as it has nothing to do with beauty or hair. However given the current weather condition of half of the US, I think it'll be very beneficial for many of my readers. Living in Phoenix has it's benefits with one being the warmer weather. Because of this, and the fact that I rarely go anywhere, we tend to not get sick in our household. Last July though, my little boy started preschool. We were immediately concerned about the bugs he would bring home and sure enough he did. Like clockwork every 2-3 weeks he had an ear infection or was on the verge of a cold. It was exhausting none the less and I typically ended up sick with him. Whenever I picked him up from school there was always a child sneezing or coughing. I secretly wanted to put that kid in a Hazmat suit but that would be wrong. Right? Now I know that children are typically sick the first year of school. And I get that helps to build up my little one's immune system. My goal w...

Moisturizers vs Conditioners: Know The Difference

Image
Do you know the difference between moisturizers and conditioners? Often times I see products claiming to be moisturizing conditioners or vice versa.  As a rule of thumb,  always review the first few ingredients. It's important that you are aware of these differences to ensure that you're using the right product to moisturize your hair. Below is a picture outlining many of these differences.

Digital Vision Board

Image
It's the end of the year and also around the time that people begin thinking about their goals for next year. I've always been a goal setter but this year I wanted to try something different. I wanted to create a vision board. What's a vision board you may wonder? According to makeavisionboard.com a vision board is  a t ool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal.  To create a traditional vision board, you'd use a large sturdy poster board. Then using an old magazine you'd cut out pictures and words create to a visual collage of your goals. I took to Google and Pinterest for ideas and came across a digital vision board. Sounds interesting right? I didn't have any magazines laying around and I sure as hell didn't want to buy magazines just to cut them up. A digital vision board proved to be my best option. So how did I get started? I'd already written down my goals weeks ago so that part was complete. I spent a S...

The L.C.O. Method

Image
One of the biggest challenges of having natural hair is retaining moisture. When I first went natural I instantly noticed a difference. It also didn't help that I lived in a dry area such as Phoenix. Many women use the L.O.C. (liquid, oil, and cream) method however more of us are leaning towards the L.C.O. (liquid, cream, and oil) method for moisturizing our hair. Honestly I just find that using oil as the last product makes more sense. I never really tried the L.O.C. method so I really never had a reason to switch over. I go into a little more detail on why I prefer the L.C.O method in one of my recent uploads.

DIY Moisturizing Deep Conditioner

Image
In one of my recent videos I test out another DIY deep conditioner using three ingredients: aloe vera gel, coconut oil and honey. I must say this is hands down the BEST DIY deep conditioner I've tried. Next time, I may add 1/2 cup of cholesterol. I'm including the video below.
