When and Why to Deep Condition

I'll admit wash day for me can be uneventful and tiresome. With my density combined with length, I do not look forward to washing my hair. My only saving grace is deep conditioning. You see I LIVE for deep conditioners. I also know the importance of when and why one should deep condition so I figured I'd share. I think most women with natural hair would agree that deep conditioning biweekly or monthly is common. I would however encourage you to up your deep conditioning routine to weekly if you have colored or damaged hair. This also includes split ends or extremely dry hair. If your hair is damaged you more than likely have high porous hair . Most good deep conditioners are protein based and the protein is what "patches" your hair for optimal health. There are so many ways to deep condition. On wet or dry hair. With or without heat. How you go about your deep conditioning routine depends on your hair texture, porosity, and current condition of your hair....

Let's Talk Oils: Grapeseed Oil

In my opinion grapeseed oil is an underdog when it comes to hair oil in the natural hair community. Most women prefer other common products such as olive or coconut oil. Grapeseed oil however can provide many benefits and is proven to be a great sealant if used properly. Grapeseed oil is extracted from the seeds of grapes and is often used in cooking. It's an odorless lightweight oil with a tinted green color. I've personally used grapeseed oil as a hot oil treatment and heat protectant. It gave my hair shine without feeling weighed down. It's loaded with fatty acids which makes it great for conditioning and strengthening hair. Don't fall asleep on grapeseed oil ladies!!! Here are some other benefits.

I first started using avocado oil about three years ago. It's a very lightweight non-greasy oil, much like jojoba oil. Avocado oil however has high quantities of monounsaturated fats which makes it great for natural hair. You can use avocado oil as: a carrier oil hot oil treatment sealant add to a conditioner detangler I personally love using avocado oil as a prepoo. Just mix together a 1/2 cup of whipped coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of honey along with 1/4 cup of avocado oil. Apply the mixture to wet or damp hair and finger detangle gently. Check out the diagram below for other benefits of avocado oil:
Tips for Beating the Cold Season

This post isn't the norm for my blog as it has nothing to do with beauty or hair. However given the current weather condition of half of the US, I think it'll be very beneficial for many of my readers. Living in Phoenix has it's benefits with one being the warmer weather. Because of this, and the fact that I rarely go anywhere, we tend to not get sick in our household. Last July though, my little boy started preschool. We were immediately concerned about the bugs he would bring home and sure enough he did. Like clockwork every 2-3 weeks he had an ear infection or was on the verge of a cold. It was exhausting none the less and I typically ended up sick with him. Whenever I picked him up from school there was always a child sneezing or coughing. I secretly wanted to put that kid in a Hazmat suit but that would be wrong. Right? Now I know that children are typically sick the first year of school. And I get that helps to build up my little one's immune system. My goal w...

Do you know the difference between moisturizers and conditioners? Often times I see products claiming to be moisturizing conditioners or vice versa. As a rule of thumb, always review the first few ingredients. It's important that you are aware of these differences to ensure that you're using the right product to moisturize your hair. Below is a picture outlining many of these differences.
